This book, Plant Breeding, has it bases in an earlier text entitled An Introduction to Plant Breeding by Jack Brown and Peter Caligari, first published in 2008. The challenges facing today's plant breeders have never been more overwhelming, yet the prospects to contribute significantly to global food security and farmers' quality of life have never been more exciting and fulfilling. Despite this there has been a worrying decline in public funding for plant breeding-related research and support for international centers of germplasm development and crop improvement. In part, this has resulted in a serious reduction in the number of young people interested in devoting their professional careers to plant breeding as well as the number of universities offering plant breeding courses or conducting relevant research in plant breeding.
The authors' aim in writing this book is to provide an integrated and updated view of the current scientific progress related to diverse plant breeding disciplines, within the context of applied breeding programs. Metabolic Ecology Most of ecology is about metabolism, the ways that organisms use energy and materials. Pourtant, il en est davantage qui correspondent à des plantations contemporaines qu'à des peuplements historiques. Combien de temps s'écoule-t-il avant que les unes et les autres soient regardés avec le même intérêt ?
Les documents manuscrits de la famille des Jussieu, professeurs de botanique au Jardin du Roy puis au Muséum d'histoire naturelle (1710-1853) ont été acquis en 1858 par le Muséum après la mort d'Adrien de Jussieu. Conservés à la Bibliothèque centrale du Muséum ils forment un fonds riche d'informations pour l'histoire des sciences, particulièrement celle du Jardin et celle de la Botanique. Parmi les plus anciens, se trouve un portefeuille contenant 98 dessins de champignons (en couleur), réalisés vers 1730, par Claude Aubriet (c. 1665-1742) sous la direction d'Antoine de Jussieu (1686- 1758). Claude Aubriet. peintre miniaturiste au Jardin du Roy. est connu pour la réalisation des illustrations des Elémens de botanique que publie Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) en 1694. Ces dessins sont loués pour leur précision par Carl von Linné lui-même. Les dessins de champignons par Aubriet furent exécutés à une période « clé » dans l'histoire de la mycologie, puisqu'en 1729. Pier Antonio Micheli publie dans son ouvrage fondamental (Novo plantarum généra) une étude précise des champignons, accompagnée d'excellentes gravures en noir et blanc. Les réalisations d'Aubriel souvent soignées et fidèles aux modèles, sont précieuses car les représentations en couleurs de champignons sont rarissimes avant la fin du xviiie siècle. Elles témoignent en outre du regard que l'on portait alors sur ces cryptogames, qui apparaissaient bien mystérieux du point de vue de leur organisation, de leur reproduction et. pour tout dire, de leur « existence » même. Cette publication intéressera vivement les mycologues et contribuera a faire connaître Claude Aubriet. En outre, elle souligne le rôle décisif que les illustrateurs scientifiques ont toujours joué au cours de l'histoire.

EcoSD network is a French association whose main objective is to encourage collaboration between academic and industrial researchers so they may create and spread advanced multidisciplinary knowledge in the eco-design fields at national and international levels. Among other actions, EcoSD organizes an annual thematic
workshop to enhance collaborative discussions. The present workshop was organized in that frame. It was held in Nantes in 2014. It gathered around 50 participants.
The notion of function in eco-design can have different meanings, according to the discipline (engineering, economy, sociology), and according to the life cycle step. When a product is conceived, eco-designing imposes to foresee the use and end-of-life phases. However, there are differences between the "expected functions", and the actual "usage" of products, that could be compared by analogy to the difference between "supply" and "demand" in economy. This gap between function and usage could be explored to improve environmental performances of products because adjusting the function is a performance axis by itself, as well as to better define comparison basis between similar (but different because multi-functional) products. This problematic is transversal to eco-design: eco-usage, functional economy, Life Cycle Assessment (functional unit and consequential LCA)... It can be resumed by the following key questions: How to define functions? How to predict and quantify functions, utilities and usages? How to compare complex objects?
The objectives of the workshop were to cross different visions from different disciplines gathering the most recent researches in France. Researchers from various research domains such as design for innovation, mechanical design, life cycle assessment (LCA), functional economy or market economy, were invited to present their work in various application fields: agricultural and food industries, waste management, construction, mechanical engineering and transports. Industrial from the automotive and buildings sectors were also invited to explain how they consider functions in their actual practices.
